President Rouhani made the remarks in a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on the sidelines of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly, according to IRNA.
He said, “The main goal behind Tehran support for the government, army and Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) of Iraq is to liberate people from Daesh terrorism and fully cleanse that country from Terrorists. Tehran will spare no efforts to this end.”
“Iran has always been beside the people and government of Iraq, especially during ups and downs of the past months, and it will continue its support for the Iraqi people to the end,” said President Rouhani.
Voicing pleasure with Iran and Iraq growing ties in all fields, President Rouhani underlined promotion of bilateral banking relations.
He said that Tehran is willing to expand all-out relations with Baghdad.
President Rouhani also thanked Iraq for hosting pilgrims to the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (as), the third Imam of Prophet Mohammad’s infallible household hoping that with lifting visa issuance, the two capitals would facilitate exchange of visits by the Iranian and Iraqi nationals to the holy sites of each country.
Meanwhile, the Iraqi Prime Minister called Tehran-Baghdad relations as “strategic” noting that the two capitals enjoy common and regional interests.
Al-Abadi referred to Iran’s cooperation in the fight against terrorism and said that thousands of popular forces are busy fighting Daesh and the terrorist group is almost in last stage of its existence in Iraq.
Al-Abadi stressed that Baghdad is trying to facilitate the way for liberation of Mosul soon.
He said that the Iraqi officials seek to minimize the existing problems in that country caused by the Daesh terrorist through international cooperation.
